Graduate/Veteran Success Story Ernest Cowens American Trade School - HVAC Graduate, May 2010 A four year veteran of the United States Marine Corp, Ernest Cowens has served his country and is now well on his way to a new career in the Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry. As a Marine, Ernest was an aviation mechanic and plane captain. He served a tour in Operation Desert Storm and returned home and began working for a temp agency performing various types of labor related work. With over fourteen years of experience working in the manufacturing sector, Ernest was able to maintain employment but not the career he truly desired. He experienced lay-offs with three different manufacturing companies and decided that it was time to train for a career in HVAC. Once he decided on his career path, his next major decision was choosing the right training program. “I knew that I could go to a bigger school but once I found out that American Trade School was founded and owned by John Vatterott and he is involved with the school – I knew this practical, no nonsense school was the best choice for me.” - Ernest Cowens Ernest graduated from the Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician program in May of 2010 is already working as a Lead Maintenance Supervisor for Drury Inns – St. Louis Convention Center. Ernest credits the demanding training program, effective career placement services and his technical skills and leadership talents – with the end result of training related employment. “American Trade School prepares you for working in the field, from the first day of school all the way through to your interview” – Ernest Cowens |
Graduate/Veteran Success Story Steve Cole American Trade School - HVAC Graduate, May 2010 Steve Cole’s service to his country began in 1984 as an aircraft mechanic in the United States Marine Corps. The experience and knowledge gained during his four years of military service led Steve to a career as an F-15 mechanic for the former McDonnell Douglas. After a few years in the aircraft industry, Steve applied his technical skills to the manufacturing industry. Working for 16 years with steady employment at a local manufacturing company, Steve and many of his co-workers experienced multiple lay-offs over a short period of time. The unpredictable nature of the manufacturing sector in recent years caused Steve to consider other options. With a strong mechanical background, Steve decided to complement his existing skills with a new career in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He felt confident that he had selected a career with a steady demand. He trusted the recommendation of a friend, considered various schools and made his decision to train at American Trade School. Steve is now employed in a mechanical maintenance position and is benefitting from the skills and knowledge he acquired while in the military, working in the field, and during his training program at American Trade School. Steve feels confident that the HVAC industry will offer him improved opportunities to work, “without his job being shipped overseas.” - Steve Cole |
Graduate/Veteran Success Story Roderick Jordan American Trade School - Electrical Graduate, June 2009 Roderick began his 9 years service to our country in 1987 with the United States Army. He has served three tours in Iraq from 1990 - 1993, beginning with Operation Desert Storm. While serving in the military, Roderick was a generator mechanic and power plant specialist. Once home from active duty, he was employed by General Electric as an electrical mechanic. After 10 years of employment and experience, the plant relocated and closed. Roderick was then faced with the need to establish a new career. He researched local career schools to pursue an electrical program. American Trade School offered Roderick the program content, instructor qualifications and training format that he was looking for. He graduated from American Trade School in June of 2009 and currently owns his own construction company. Roderick’s military service and career training have come full circle; he is now part of the instructional staff at American Trade School and has been training US Army soldiers in TOC (tactical operation center) power. The training covers safe and effective tactical power grids both domestically and in the field. “I am knowledgeable about working with generators and providing mobile power. I have been in the field and I know what these soldiers are experiencing and what they need to get done.” - Roderick Jordan |
| Graduate/Veteran Success Story Mike Conner American Trade School - Electrical Graduate, March 2010 Mike Conner enlisted with the United States Navy in 1982 and served through 1986. He gained valuable skills and experience as an aviation structural specialist. His interest and ability in troubleshooting and mechanical work led him to a job as an equipment operator. While the work remained somewhat steady, it often required Mike to relocate to various parts of the country to get work. Mike had always had an interest in electricity but wasn’t convinced it was the right career path for him. He worked closely with an electrician in the mining industry and decided that he would like to pursue an electrical training program. After visiting a few career schools in the area, Mike decided that American Trade School was the best fit for him. “When I toured the school, I could see the equipment and frames that I would be working on and realized this is where I am really gonna learn.” – Mike Conner While attending the training program, Mike honed his electrical skills working in the field for a property management company conducting electrical upgrades on older properties. After his graduation he began working for Innovet and is currently working on a project to expand the power base for a major wireless service provider. After a few months on the job, Mike knew that his experience was solid and his knowledge good – as he avoided an install error that would have resulted in a code violation. Saving the company time and money helped him gain the professional respect he had earned. When asked, are you happy with your decision to pursue electricity, he replied, “I wish I had done this 20 years ago.” - Mike Conner |
